After 100 years of making steel, word came on Tuesday that U.S. Steel, formerly Stelco, will permanently shut down its iron and steel making operations. On one hand, it is sad - truly the end of an era for an industry which was formerly Hamilton's largest employer and the real backbone of a young Hamilton.
On the other hand, we can throw a positive light on this news. The fabric of Hamilton has changed so much over the last 100 years that the Hamilton we know today now employs more people in health care than industry.
I guess that is the way it is really supposed to be. After all, nothing ever stays the same. While it is sad to say goodbye to some of Hamilton's history, we can look positively at the fact we have not remained stagnant and that new businesses have emerged to fill the gaps.
Still, "Healthtown" just doesn't have the same ring, does it?!
